Gypsum-exclusive plants accumulate more leaf S than non-exclusive species both in and off gypsum

چکیده

Gypsum-exclusive species (gypsophiles), are restricted to gypseous soils in natural environments. However, it is unclear why gypsophiles display greater affinity gyspeous than other soils. These plants edaphic endemics, growing alkaline with high Ca and S. Gypsophiles tend show higher foliar S, lower K and, sometimes, Mg non-exclusive gypsum species, named gypsovags. Our aim was test if the unique leaf elemental signature of could be result special nutritional requirements linked their specificity hamper completion life cycle growth soil types. To this hypothesis, we cultivated five gypsovags dominant Spanish outcrops on calcareous (non-gypseous) field for 29 months. We regularly measured phenology, differences traits, final biomass, individual seed mass, viability, photosynthetic assimilation composition. found all studied were able complete non-gypseous soil, producing viable seeds, attaining biomass displaying rates soil. The composition some (both gypsovags) shifted depending although none them showed deficiency symptoms. Regardless type, had Mg, Fe, Al, Na, Mn, Cr Consequently, have a chemical compared same family, particularly due S regardless conditions. these nutrient not sufficient explain

Gypsophile Chemistry Unveiled: Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy Provides New Insight into Plant Adaptations to Gypsum Soils

Gypsum soils are among the most restrictive and widespread substrates for plant life. Plants living on gypsum are classified as gypsophiles (exclusive to gypsum) and gypsovags (non-exclusive to gypsum). The former have been separated into wide and narrow gypsophiles, each with a putative different ecological strategy. Mechanisms displayed by gypsum plants to compete and survive on gypsum are st...

Carbonate and Gypsum

Inorganic carbonate in soil occurs predominantly as the sparingly soluble alkaline-earth carbonates, calcite (CaCOs) and dolomite (CaMg(CO,),). Calcite is usually the dominant form in active pedogenic environments (Doner & Lynn, 1977; Nelson, 1982). There are only a few reported occurrences of aragonite (CaCOs) and vaterite (CaCOs) in soils. Sodium carbonate and magnesium carbonate and hydroxyc...

Study on Preparation of High-strength Gypsum by FGD Gypsum

With the enlarging of industrial desulfurization, the amount of FGD gypsum is increasing rapidly. The preparation of alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-HH) is one of the biggest concerns for FGD gypsum reclamation. The influence of mixed chlorate solution of Mg-Ca-Na concentrations (5-30 wt%) and FGD gypsum concentrations(5-30 wt%) by hydrothermal salt solution method at atmospheric were inve...

Plants living on gypsum: beyond the specialist model.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Plants from gypsum habitats are classified as gypsophiles and gypsovags. The former include both narrow endemics limited to small gypsum areas and regionally dominant gypsophiles growing in gypsum areas of large regions, whereas gypsovags are plants that can grow both in gypsum and non-gypsum soils. Factors controlling the distribution of gypsum plants are still not fully un...

Enhancing seedling production of native species to restore gypsum habitats.

Gypsum habitats are widespread globally and are important for biological conservation. Nevertheless, they are often affected by human disturbances and thus require restoration. Sowing and planting have shown positive results, but these actions are usually limited by the lack of native plant material in commercial nurseries, and very little information is available on the propagation of these sp...
